Chapter 1

Tucker sat in the middle of the dusty square, his striped tail curled around his paws. All around him, small kittens wandered alone through the streets. Some searched for scraps near the market. Others huddled in doorways when the wind blew cold. Tucker watched them and felt his chest tighten. He wanted to build them a shelter, a place with walls and warmth but no locked doors. The kittens could come and go as they pleased. They would be safe but still free. That was his dream. He stood and shook the dust from his fur. First, he needed to gather the kittens so he could count them all. Tucker trotted to an old storage shed behind the baker's shop. Inside, he found wooden poles and torn fabric. He tied the fabric between the poles to make a net. Then he attached colorful cat toys to the edges with string. The toys dangled and swayed when he lifted the net. It would catch the kittens gently without scaring them or causing harm. Tucker dragged the net to a narrow alley where three kittens played near a stack of crates. He held his breath and swept the net forward in a wide arc. The toys jingled and sparkled in the sunlight. The kittens pounced toward them, curious and playful. When they tumbled into the soft fabric, Tucker gathered the edges carefully. He set them down in the square and began planning the cabin he would build from wood and cardboard and anything else he could find. The shelter would have open windows and soft bedding inside. It would be a home that never trapped anyone.
