Chapter 1

Jasper drifted through the fog, his tattered coat trailing behind him like kelp in a current. The ocean had claimed him in 1782, and now he served her will—frightening smugglers, cursing mutineers, collecting tribute from ships that passed his rocks. Each task bound him tighter to the waves. He wanted only one thing: to earn his rest from the tides and finally be free of the sea's grip. Tonight the ocean whispered something different. She pulled him down through dark water to the seafloor where his ship had broken apart. There, buried in sand and coral, lay iron shackles thick with barnacles and wrapped in seaweed. They pulsed with cold light. Jasper understood—the sea was offering him judgment at last. He would have to wear these shackles and journey to the place where the ocean's heart beat strongest, where she could decide if his service had been enough. He reached for the rusted metal, and it burned like ice against his ghostly hands. The shackles locked around his wrists with a crack that split the water. Weight crushed down on him—memories of sailors he'd failed, tribute he'd taken, fog he'd twisted to lead ships astray. He rose through the dark water and broke the surface. The ocean pushed him toward shore, toward a strip of sand where waves met land. There, hovering above the water, a swirl of dark blue mist turned and turned. It glowed faint and cold. Jasper moved closer. The swirl opened like an eye, and the ocean's voice crashed through his skull. She showed him a deep place far from shore where currents met and the water turned black. That was where she would judge him. That was where he would learn if two centuries of service had bought his freedom. But first, she demanded one final trial. The mist showed him a broken ship bow tangled in seaweed and rope, crashed against jagged rocks. He had to carry it into the water as proof of his strength and his willingness to serve until the very end. Jasper wrapped his shackled hands around the splintered wood. The bow was heavy, soaked through with salt and time. He dragged it toward the waves, each step harder than the last. The iron cut into his wrists. His ghostly form flickered and faded. But he pulled the wreckage into the surf, and the ocean swallowed it whole. The mist swirl vanished. The shackles grew heavier still. Now the sea would take him to the deep place, and there his two hundred years of service would finally be judged.
