Chapter 2

Randy stood at the base of the Fire Temple steps. His paws felt cold against the stone. This was where he would learn his first element. He took a breath and climbed. Each step brought him closer to the massive doors carved with flame patterns. His whiskers trembled slightly, but he didn't stop. At the top, he pushed the doors open and walked inside. The air felt warmer here. Training mats covered the floor in neat rows. He chose one near the center and knelt down. His first lesson would be patience—learning to sit still before learning to move. Randy closed his eyes and felt the warmth around him. This was how mastery began. Hours passed on the mat. His legs ached and his tail twitched, but Randy stayed still. When he finally opened his eyes, sunlight slanted through the temple windows. He stood and walked deeper into the building. A forge waited in the back room, decorated with dragon designs and red lanterns hanging from the ceiling. The coals inside glowed orange and hot. This was where he would learn to shape fire with his paws, to bend heat instead of fear it. Randy picked up a pair of tongs and held them over the flames. The metal warmed in his grip. Outside the temple, a ceremonial fire burned in a stone pit. Randy approached it carefully. The flames danced and shifted with the wind. He sat cross-legged beside it and watched the patterns. Fire moved fast but followed rules. It needed fuel. It needed air. He reached out slowly and felt the heat against his fur. Not close enough to burn, but close enough to understand. He pulled his paw back and tried again, this time holding it steady. The fear in his chest grew smaller. Before heading back to the pavilion, Randy knelt on a flat stone circle set into the ground. Symbols covered its surface—mountains, roots, and seeds carved deep into the rock. He pressed both paws against it and felt the cool, solid weight beneath him. Earth didn't move like fire. It held steady and strong. He would need that strength later, when fire alone wasn't enough. Randy stood and brushed the dust from his robe. One day down. Four elements left to learn. He walked back toward the training grounds as the sun began to set.
