Chapter 1

Hiroshi Tsurumaki adjusted his chef's hat and stared at the competition flyer on his kitchen wall. The Iron Blade Championship was three months away. His rival, Chef Nakamura, had won the last two years. This year would be different. Hiroshi picked up his knife and began to dice vegetables. Each cut had to be perfect. Speed and precision—that's what the judges wanted. He wiped his beak with the back of his wing and smiled. The title was within reach. But winning meant more than practice in his kitchen. Hiroshi needed to understand what people really wanted to eat. He needed to connect with the judges before the competition even started. That's why he built the stall—a mobile setup with colorful banners and wooden carvings he'd made himself. Fresh mochi would be his test. He could serve customers and watch their faces as they ate. Their reactions would tell him everything. Hiroshi loaded the last tray of sweet rice cakes into his cart. The wooden wheels creaked as he pushed it toward the door. The morning air was cool against his feathers. Hiroshi set up his stall and arranged the mochi in neat rows. Steam rose from the fresh batches. People began to stop and look. An elderly woman smiled as she bit into the strawberry filling. A businessman nodded and bought three more. Each customer taught Hiroshi something new about flavor and texture. This was how he would beat Nakamura—by knowing exactly what people wanted. By noon, a crowd had formed around his stall. Hiroshi worked fast, handing out samples and taking mental notes. A young girl squealed with joy at the matcha flavor. Her mother asked about the recipe. These people weren't just customers—they were his teachers. As he packed up his cart that afternoon, Hiroshi spotted a poster on a nearby wall. The Grand Cultural Festival pavilion would host the Iron Blade Championship finals. The building looked impressive in the photo, with traditional designs covering every surface. That's where he would face Nakamura. That's where he would win. But first, he needed the freshest ingredients possible. Tomorrow he would visit the floating trout pen on the river. The fish there would be perfect for his final dish. Hiroshi tucked the empty trays into his cart and headed home. Three months of preparation started now.
