Chapter 1

Margaret pressed her forehead against the cold shop window. The empty space stared back at her—bare walls, dusty floors, and potential. She wanted to build something here in Edinburgh. Not just any business, but a bookstore that would become the neighborhood's beating heart. A place where people could gather, browse, and belong. She pulled her jacket tighter and smiled. This dream had lived in her head for years. Now it was time to make it real. But the rent deposit sat weeks away. She needed another plan first. Margaret walked home and pulled out her toolbox. By afternoon, she'd built a small wooden box with a glass door. A little free library. She painted it blue and wrote "Take a Book, Leave a Book" across the top. The next morning, she filled it with twenty paperbacks from her own shelves and mounted it on a post outside her flat. Days passed. Margaret checked the little library each morning. Books disappeared and new ones appeared. People left notes tucked inside the covers. One woman stopped her on the sidewalk to ask about mystery recommendations. An older man thanked her for the poetry collection he'd found. She started recognizing faces. Margaret bought a wooden bench and set it up near the little library. She sat there each evening with her notebook, sketching plans for the bookstore. Neighbors stopped to chat. They asked about her drawings. She told them about her dream. Their eyes lit up. One said the neighborhood needed a place like that. Another promised to visit on opening day. Margaret wrote down their words. The bookstore was already taking shape, one conversation at a time.
