Chapter 3

Tempus stood in the White Rabbit House surrounded by decades of dust and silence. The filing cabinet drawers hung open like mouths waiting to speak. Papers covered the desk in front of him—receipts, letters, photographs of his grandfather holding the legendary timepiece. He found what he needed in a yellowed envelope: the original theft report from forty-three years ago, signed by his father. The document listed every detail of the watch—its gold casing, the three hands that moved backward and forward, the engraving on the back. More importantly, it named the thief: a dealer who worked in the underground markets. Tempus folded the report and slipped it into his vest pocket. Now he had proof. Now he had a name. The maps from the subway tunnels would lead him to the dealer's old meeting places. Someone in those dark corners would remember where the timepiece went next. But the underground dealers were ghosts now, scattered or dead after forty-three years. Tempus needed someone who remembered the old days, someone who collected stories about trades and thieves. He locked the house behind him and walked through streets lined with crumbling buildings. Pink neon signs buzzed overhead, casting strange light on wet pavement. A tavern appeared ahead, its worn walls marked with scars from decades of use. Old English letters hung above the door. Inside, voices mixed with the clink of glasses. Tempus pushed through the entrance. The smell of smoke and spilled drinks hit him. Men and women sat at dark wood tables, their faces lined with age. These were the ones who stayed, who watched Demented Dreamland change year after year. One of them would know the dealer's name. One of them would point him toward the timepiece. He walked to the bar and pulled out the theft report, ready to ask his questions. The bartender wiped a glass with a stained cloth and studied the document. His eyes moved across the words slowly. He set the glass down and pointed to a woman in the corner booth. Gray hair fell across her shoulders. Her fingers traced patterns on the table as she talked to herself. Tempus crossed the room and slid into the seat across from her. She looked up with clear blue eyes. He placed the report between them. She read the dealer's name and nodded once. Her voice came out rough, barely above a whisper. She remembered the man. She remembered the trades. He moved his operation west, toward the pillar on the old road. The one carved with the rabbit outline. Tempus stood and left three coins on the table. Outside, he turned toward the western road. Somewhere ahead, that carved pillar would mark his next step. The timepiece was closer now. He could feel it. The road narrowed as he walked. Buildings gave way to empty lots and twisted metal fences. Then he saw it—an indigo pillar rising from the roadside, carved with a white rabbit outline. Text in magenta and gold curved across its surface: "The White Rabbit House." His breath caught. This marker led treasure hunters to his family's estate, a trail left by those who sought the legendary timepiece before him. Beyond the pillar stood a monument that made him stop. Dark indigo stone twisted upward, decorated with magenta and gold designs. Clock gears and springs wrapped around its base. This was built for the craftsmen, the clockmakers who created works like his grandfather's masterpiece. Tempus touched the cold stone. Demented Dreamland held more history than he knew. The world itself remembered what his family had lost. He pulled out the theft report and checked the dealer's last known direction. The pillar pointed him forward. The monument reminded him why he searched. He walked on, following the only trail that mattered.
