Chapter 3

The Queen of Hearts stood in her parlor and studied a map of Demented Dreamland spread across her table. Her mechanical heart ticked steadily as her finger traced the twisted streets and crooked alleys. She needed to know where power lived in this place. Where did the crowds gather? Where did money change hands? Where could she find those who would become her trembling subjects? The city sprawled before her in ink and paper, full of squares and corners she had never explored. Her throne room would need to rise somewhere everyone could see it. Her podium already helped her practice commands, but she needed to understand the bones of this place. She rolled up the map and tucked it under her arm. A queen couldn't rule what she didn't know. Today she would walk these streets and find where her kingdom would take root. The central square appeared first, exactly where the map had promised. People moved through it in steady streams, hurrying between shops and cafes. Perfect. The Queen smiled and pictured a guillotine standing right in the middle, where every passing eye would see it. Dark indigo and magenta would make it unmistakable as hers. Gold trim would catch the light. Shattered mirrors could surround it, reflecting the consequences of disobedience back at the crowds. She could almost hear the blade falling, marking the price of challenging her authority. Her mechanical heart ticked faster. This square would become the center of her power, where fear would keep her subjects in line. She turned down another street and discovered a grand hall with arched ceilings and long oak tables. Empty now, but she could see its purpose clearly. This would be her banquet hall, where nobles would pledge loyalty over formal dinners. She walked between the tables, her fingers trailing across the polished wood. Dark indigo banners would hang from the ceiling. White and magenta tablecloths would match her colors. Gold trim along the walls would make the space feel royal. Here, her subjects would eat only when she allowed it, speak only when she permitted it, and leave only when she dismissed them. The hall's size promised room for dozens of trembling guests. Near the hall's entrance, she found a podium with a brass speaking horn and carved royal insignia. The stone base looked solid enough to last. She stepped behind it and gripped the edges, imagining crowds forced to listen as she announced her changing rules. This would stand where everyone approaching the hall could see it—a constant reminder that her laws governed every step they took. The Queen straightened her crown and looked back across everything she'd discovered today. A square for punishment. A hall for loyalty. A podium for commands. Demented Dreamland was already showing her exactly where her kingdom would rise. Soon these spaces would be hers, and every subject would know their queen.
