Chapter 1

President W. Wilson stood in his private command center, adjusting the heavy goggles that covered half his face. The mechanical lenses whirred and clicked as they focused on the wall of screens before him. Each display showed a different military facility across New Liberty. He wanted them all under his direct command. Every tank, every soldier, every factory that built weapons—all of it would answer only to him. His fingers drummed against the metal desk. The nation's power was scattered among too many hands. That would change soon. He walked across the room to the military planning table that dominated the center space. The surface stretched wide, covered with maps and troop positions marked in precise detail. Colored pins indicated different battalions. Red lines showed factory locations. Blue circles marked ammunition stores. Wilson's mechanical goggles zoomed in on each section as he studied them. This table would be his stage. Tomorrow, the generals would gather here. He would stand above them at this very table and outline his plan. They would see his vision for a unified command structure. They would understand that New Liberty needed one strong hand guiding its military might. By week's end, every soldier in the nation would report directly to him. The scattered pieces would finally become one force, and he would control it all. Wilson stepped back from the table and pulled a rolled blueprint from his coat pocket. He spread it across a clear section of the planning surface. The architectural drawings showed his next step—a palace that would serve as the true seat of power. Brass gears decorated the exterior walls in the design. Steam pipes wound through every floor. The building would house military command centers, factory oversight stations, and direct communication lines to every installation in New Liberty. From this one place, he would control everything. No more scattered offices or separate departments. The palace would be his machine, and New Liberty would run exactly as he designed it. Construction would begin within the month. Soon, very soon, his dream would be real. A sharp whistle cut through the air outside his window. The factory whistle tower signaled the shift change across the industrial district. Workers would be leaving their posts now, heading home while the night crews took over. Wilson pressed his palm against the blueprint. That tower represented the old way—workers controlled by time, factories run by foremen, production scattered across the city. His palace would change all of that. When it stood complete, every whistle, every shift, every gear would turn according to his command. He rolled up the blueprint and tucked it back into his coat. The generals would arrive tomorrow. The palace would rise within weeks. And New Liberty would finally have the strong, unified leadership it needed.
