Chapter 10

The first couple walked through the door at seven o'clock. Then another. By seven-fifteen, six pairs filled the living room, some on chairs, others standing. Greg welcomed them while Linda handed out cards for the post box downtown. They talked for two hours—about fights, about silence, about almost leaving and choosing to stay. One man cried. His wife held his hand. Another couple shared what finally helped them reconnect. When the session ended, three pairs signed up for private check-ins. Two left books on the shelf. Greg and Linda stood in the empty room afterward, looking at the chairs still warm from use. They'd built something real. Couples were getting help. The support group worked. Word spread fast. Within two weeks, they needed a bigger space. The owner of the old community center downtown offered them the building rent-free. Greg and Linda spent three days cleaning out dust and broken furniture. They needed to make it welcoming—a place where struggling couples would feel safe enough to walk through the door. Linda found a marble statue at an estate sale, smooth white stone that caught the afternoon light. She set it in the entrance. The statue seemed to glow when the sun hit it, reflecting brightness across the walls. Outside, Greg planted a tree near the front steps. Golden leaves covered its branches, and he wrapped small lights through the bark. A wooden bench circled the trunk. Couples could sit there before sessions if they needed a minute to gather themselves. Behind the building, Linda arranged a fire pit made of crystals with flames that flickered in sunset colors. The heat would keep people comfortable during evening meetings when the air turned cold. They stood back and looked at what they'd created—a complete space for healing. The grand opening brought fourteen couples through the door. Some were new. Others had attended sessions in the living room and came back with friends. Greg and Linda didn't lead every conversation anymore—experienced couples helped newer ones, sharing what had saved their own marriages. By midnight, the building still held people talking quietly around the fire pit. Greg watched through the window as one couple laughed together for the first time in months. Linda leaned against his shoulder. They'd done it. Not just a single meeting or a temporary fix. They'd built a lasting place where broken marriages could find their way back together.
