Chapter 5

Gryndel's tail traced a perfect spiral in the air. The dream walker stood beside them, eyes tracking the smoke without blinking. "You've stopped swaying," Gryndel purred, grin spreading wide. "Both worlds pull at you now, but you hold steady." The dream walker's feet remained planted, neither tilting toward sleep nor waking. Their breathing came slow and even. "Yesterday you stumbled between each crossing," Gryndel continued, circling their student. "Today you walk the line without falling." The dream walker's hands hung loose at their sides, relaxed. No trembling. No uncertainty. "This is progress," Gryndel said, yellow eyes bright with satisfaction. "You're learning to exist in both places at once." Gryndel's whiskers twitched with gleeful satisfaction. "Come. Your balance deserves proper acknowledgment." They led the dream walker through streets that flickered between solid and translucent. Near the clinic, something new had appeared—a holographic display that shimmered against the wall. Dark indigo and white twisted through magenta and gold, forming images that shifted and changed. Teacups stacked impossibly high. Cards that dealt themselves in reverse. Clocks that melted into stairways leading nowhere. The dream walker stopped and stared. Their reflection caught in the hologram, splitting into two versions that moved in perfect sync. "This marks those who make reality stutter," Gryndel said, tail writing satisfaction in smoke. "You've earned your place among the ones who walk both worlds without tipping." The dream walker reached toward the display. Their hand passed through light that felt warm and cold at once. The hologram rippled, incorporating their movement into its pattern. For a moment, their form appeared in the shifting images—standing steady while both worlds pulled equally. Gryndel's grin stretched impossibly wide. "You see? Even the display knows you've stopped falling." The dream walker's shoulders straightened. Confidence settled into their stance. They'd crossed the threshold from struggling to succeeding, and the proof shimmered before them in colors that belonged to neither sleep nor waking. They continued walking until a column rose before them, taller than the surrounding buildings. Glass panels rotated around its surface, catching light and throwing it in strange directions. Each panel held names etched in gold—those who'd mastered crossing between realms without losing themselves. "Read them," Gryndel said, padding around the base. The dream walker stepped closer and traced their fingers along the glass. Some names glowed brighter than others. "The ones who shine brightest walk both worlds every day now. They forgot which side they started on." The dream walker pulled their hand back and looked down at Gryndel. Their expression asked the question without words. "Yes," Gryndel purred. "Your name will go here when you finish. Reality will remember you as one who learned to split it cleanly." A building waited just beyond the column, its doors propped open. Red velvet seats filled rows that curved toward a spotlit stage. Bronze plaques lined the walls, each one capturing a moment—first successful crossing, longest sustained balance, cleanest split between sleeping and waking. The dream walker moved through the theater slowly, reading each plaque. Their fingers brushed across one that showed a figure standing with feet in two different worlds. "Small victories," Gryndel said from the stage, yellow eyes gleaming in the spotlight. "Each one brings you closer to complete control." The dream walker turned and met Gryndel's gaze. For the first time since training began, they smiled. Not uncertain. Not afraid. Just ready. Gryndel's tail curled with pride. Their student had learned what mattered most—that mastery came in steps, and each step deserved recognition before taking the next.
