Chapter 1

Captain Voidrift slammed his fist on the table, scattering star charts across the worn surface. He needed a place where deals happened in shadows, where smugglers and rebels could trade without fear. Nereidum was vast and lawless—perfect for his dream. A hidden outpost, built in secret, where illegal goods and forbidden information changed hands. He'd make it real, no matter the cost. He grabbed a map and circled a canyon marked in red. The area was remote, far from patrol routes. Old spacecraft wreckage littered the ground there, rusted and forgotten. Captain Voidrift grinned. He could build something from those parts—a saloon that looked harmless on the surface. Travelers would see a watering hole for pilots. But underneath, in hidden rooms, the real business would happen. He rolled up the map and stuffed it in his coat. The Smugglers' Spaceport Saloon would rise from copper and alien rock, a front for every illegal deal on Nereidum. His outpost would be born. Captain Voidrift sketched out the final details on a scrap of metal. The saloon needed something for traders to recognize each other. Something that looked normal but sent a clear signal to those who knew. He drew a fountain—red-orange rock stacked high with a copper sphere on top. Aqua green water would pour into a basin below. Outlaws could arrange meetings there without drawing attention. One person waiting by a fountain wouldn't raise suspicion. Two people meeting for a drink seemed harmless. But both would know what it really meant. The fountain would mark the spot where secrets and cargo changed hands. His outpost would have everything it needed to thrive in the shadows. He turned his attention to transport. Moving illegal goods required vehicles that blended in. Captain Voidrift traced his finger along a list of local hover transports for sale. A sleek dark grey model caught his eye—common enough to avoid notice, large enough to retrofit with hidden compartments. He circled it three times. Contraband needed safe passage, and patrols wouldn't look twice at ordinary traffic. He'd buy it tomorrow and start the modifications himself. The saloon would have its fountain, and now it would have its delivery system. His hidden outpost was taking shape, piece by piece. Soon, Nereidum's outlaws would have a home.
