Chapter 3

Richard walked the perimeter of Fort Orynth, his yellow eyes scanning beyond the walls. The fort gave his Rangers a home, but they needed more than that. They needed allies, supply routes, and places to gather intelligence. His boots crunched on gravel as he considered the surrounding region. Ivanpath Village sat close enough for quick communication—the siren he'd planned would connect them. Beyond that, trade roads stretched toward other settlements where he could recruit or resupply. The forests provided cover for patrols and training exercises. The high ground near the fort offered vantage points to spot threats early. Everything he needed was within reach. This location wasn't just defensible—it was strategic. Richard adjusted his cap and headed back inside. The Rangers would put down roots here and reach outward from this center. Fort Orynth would become exactly what he'd envisioned: a base that could protect, train, and strike when needed. But roots needed visible proof of what the Rangers stood for. Richard headed into Ivanpath Village the next morning with measurements and sketches. He commissioned a monument for the village square—three bronze figures of Rangers on patrol, mounted on a green base. A silver plaque would list the names of Rangers who'd served with honor. Citizens needed to see what their protectors looked like, needed to remember the faces behind the uniforms. The monument would stand as a reminder that greatness was possible here. Richard turned his attention to recruitment next. The fort had space for more Rangers, but recruits needed a reason to sign up. He installed a digital sign outside the training grounds, its screen bright enough to catch eyes from the road. Bold slogans scrolled across it—"Defend Your Home" and "Join the Elite"—alongside images of Rangers in action. Every passing traveler would see it. Every farmer's son would wonder if he had what it took. The final piece came together in the village itself. Richard helped clear and repaint an old meeting hall, transforming it into a community center. Green and brown paint covered the walls, with yellow trim around the windows and doors. Inside, long tables and benches filled the main room. This was where Rangers and villagers would share meals, swap stories, and build trust. The Rangers weren't just soldiers in a fort—they were part of this place. Richard stood in the doorway as the sun set, watching workers hang the last light fixtures. The foundation was solid now. The connections were forming. Fort Orynth wasn't just a base anymore—it was the heart of something bigger.
