Chapter 4

Glim stepped into the Junction's central plaza and stopped. A massive structure rose before him—a castle made entirely of glowing ice. Its walls shimmered blue and white under the afternoon sun. Turrets twisted toward the sky, each one carved with intricate patterns. He walked closer and pressed his webbed hand against the surface. Cold bit through his skin, but the ice held firm. Other magicians passed by without stopping, as if frozen castles were normal here. Glim's orange eyes reflected the blue glow. This world built impossible things and made them real. If ice could become a castle, then he could master his trick. He pulled his practice deck from his jacket and shuffled once, his tentacles steady. Three months felt like enough time now. He left the castle behind and followed the sound of chiming bells. A tower stood at the center of town, taller than any building he'd seen. Neon lights traced patterns along its surface, shifting from green to purple to blue. The design looked like nothing from his home world—angles that shouldn't work, windows that glowed from within. A clock face near the top displayed symbols instead of numbers, marking time in a way only Zyzzle Junction would understand. The bells rang again, and the sound rolled across the plaza. Every magician nearby paused for just a moment, then returned to their work. Glim tilted his head back and watched the lights pulse in rhythm with the chimes. This tower didn't just tell time—it reminded everyone that moments mattered. His webbed fingers touched his deck through his jacket pocket. Three months of moments. Three months of practice. The tower chimed once more, and Glim turned toward the practice hall. Time was moving, and so was he. Past the tower, something stopped him in his tracks. A swirling mass of neon colors hung in the air, spinning slowly like a storm frozen mid-motion. Purple mixed with orange, green bled into pink. The colors moved in circles, pulling his gaze deeper into the center. Glim walked underneath it and looked up. The swirl cast colored shadows across his face. His tentacles reached up without thinking, stretching toward the light. The colors reminded him of what magic should feel like—wild, alive, impossible to hold. Other magicians gathered beneath it too, watching in silence. Some practiced levitation moves, trying to match the way the colors defied gravity. Glim shuffled his deck and let a card float from his palm. It wobbled and fell. He tried again. The swirl kept spinning above him, patient and perfect. He found a bench near a glowing bush that lit up the walkway. Round spheres of light drifted from its branches, floating up like bubbles before fading into the evening air. The bush pulsed with soft blue light, then shifted to green. Glim sat down and spread his cards on his lap. His webbed fingers moved through the shuffle he'd practiced a thousand times. The spheres floated past his shoulder, casting moving shadows across the cards. This world showed him magic in everything—towers that marked time, swirls that hung in the air, plants that glowed without reason. He didn't need to understand how it worked. He just needed to believe it was possible. Glim stacked his deck and tucked it away. Three months wasn't just time to practice. It was time to become part of this place, to prove he belonged among the impossible. He stood and walked back toward the practice hall, leaving the glowing bush behind.
