Nia woke before dawn and grabbed her notebook. She needed to learn everything about running a shelter. The library opened at eight, so she had time to make breakfast and plan her day. This was step one: research. The Hello Kitty Reading School sat three blocks from her apartment. Pink bows decorated the entrance, and the door chimed when she pushed through. Inside, rows of books lined the walls. She found the animal care section and pulled six volumes from the shelf. Dog nutrition. Grooming basics. Health signs to watch for. She flipped through pages and scribbled notes. Her hand cramped after an hour, but she kept writing. She needed to know this stuff before she opened her center. At noon, she walked to the empty lot with her backpack full of supplies. A colorful pavilion stood near the fence, its awnings bright against the gray sky. Water streamed from playful fountains into a clean basin below. She filled three buckets and carried them to the center of the lot. The terrier from yesterday needed a bath. She set up a washing station on the concrete and got to work. Soap suds splashed her sneakers as she scrubbed mud from the pup's fur. By late afternoon, she'd built a small play area with miniature slides and tunnels. The terrier zipped through a pink tube and barked with joy. Nia sat on the ground and watched the dog explore. This was it—the real beginning. She'd studied, she'd cleaned, and she'd created a space where scared dogs could feel safe again. Tomorrow she'd find more pups who needed help. Her adoption center was taking shape, one small step at a time.
