Chapter 4

Linda and Greg walked to the edge of town where the old railroad tracks cut through empty fields. Rusted metal gleamed in the afternoon sun. Greg kicked at loose gravel between the ties while Linda stared down the line toward the horizon. This was the kind of place people forgot about—quiet, forgotten, miles from anywhere that mattered. But standing there made something clear. Their support group wasn't just about fixing marriages. It was about finding each other in the middle of nowhere and deciding that was enough. Linda turned to Greg. He met her eyes and nodded. They walked back toward town together, ready for whatever came next. The blanched wood and brick clock tower rose above the buildings ahead. Its pale timbers and stone stood solid against the blue sky. Linda checked the time—almost four o'clock. The tower had marked every hour of every day for as long as anyone could remember. People looked up at it to know when to head home, when to start dinner, when to show up for meetings. Greg pointed at it. "That's where people know they belong," he said. Linda understood. The tower was a constant, something you could count on. Their support group needed to be like that too. They passed a cluster of cactus flowers blooming near the sidewalk. Coral and yellow petals caught the afternoon light. Greg stopped to look at them. Most people walked right by, but the flowers were there—bright and alive in the quiet spaces. Linda crouched down. The blooms opened wide despite the heat and dust. A desert cactus nearby showed the same strength, its crimson blossoms pushing through green spines. Life found a way even when conditions were hard. Linda stood and touched Greg's arm. "That's what we're doing," she said. "Making something grow where it's difficult." They walked the rest of the way home in comfortable silence. The clock tower faded behind them, but its presence stayed in their minds. The flowers would close at night and open again tomorrow. The cactus would keep blooming through summer. Linda and Greg had built something that mattered—not just for themselves, but for anyone who needed to know that struggling didn't mean failing. Their support group was real now, rooted in this town like the tower and the flowers. They reached their front door and went inside, knowing they'd done enough for today.
