Chapter 2

Verity needed to understand this new territory before the next investigators arrived. The swamp was different from the hospital—darker, wilder, harder to read. She rose from the rotting dock and drifted across the black water's surface. Her tattered robes hung motionless in the still air. She studied the twisted trees and hanging moss, memorizing each shadow and sound. A bullfrog croaked somewhere in the darkness. Water lapped against half-sunken logs. This place would test the investigators differently than the hospital had. Here they would be afraid before they even saw her. Good. Fear revealed the truth faster than comfort ever could. She found a lamp hanging from a wooden post near the dam entrance. The post leaned at an angle, half-rotted by swamp water. Dark emerald grass grew thick around its base. The lamp would draw investigators here after sunset, making them easy to see. They would follow its glow like moths, thinking it meant shelter or safety. She would watch them approach, studying their faces in the yellow light. Their first reactions would tell her much about their hearts. Beyond the dam, she discovered a blackened tourist shack. The building had collapsed on one side, its walls stained and crumbling. A broken sign hung by the door, the word "Welcome" still readable through the dirt. Inside she found old books about ghost hunting methods and equipment guides. Papers scattered across the floor showed diagrams of meters and cameras. She needed to know these tools, to understand how investigators would try to trap or expose her. Knowledge of their methods meant power over her judgments. Near the shack stood a wooden table, its surface covered in investigation equipment someone had left behind. Cameras, voice recorders, and meters sat in the mud. Verity drifted closer, her white eyes fixed on each device. She would learn what these objects did and how investigators used them. When the next group arrived with their tools and their questions, she would be ready. The swamp was hers now, and she would judge them all.
