Chapter 4

Echo sat at the clubhouse table and spread her notes across the wood. The Avian Appreciation Club had meeting schedules pinned to a corkboard. She copied down dates and times. Outside the window, a pigeon landed on a wire and cooed. She needed to know what birds in Fenif ate, where they nested, how the seasons changed their behavior. Her seventeen boxes of supplies wouldn't help if she kept guessing. She closed her notebook and stood. Real learning happened through watching and asking questions, not just reading books. She left the clubhouse and walked toward the edge of town where the buildings ended and the swamp began. The ground got softer with each step. Dark water pooled between twisted roots and hanging moss. As the sun dropped lower, shadows spread across the murky paths. Then she spotted them—flowers glowing in a dark pinkish-red, their petals pulsing with light. They flickered like broken screens but lit the way forward. Echo stepped carefully between the glowing lilies, watching where solid ground held firm beneath her boots. The swamp opened into a clearing where a huge tree drooped its branches low. Flowers wrapped around the dangling limbs, and butterflies with glittery wings circled in slow loops. Some landed on the branches while others hovered near the colorful blooms. Echo stopped and stared. Birds perched on the lower branches, tucked safely between the soft, draped plants. A thrush preened its feathers. A warbler tilted its head and watched her. This tree gave them exactly what they needed—cover, rest, beauty. Her sanctuary would need trees like this. She turned back toward town as darkness settled fully over the swamp. The glowing lilies marked her path like small beacons. Above the distant rooftops, a tall structure rose into the night sky—a treehouse built inside the petals of a massive pink orchid. It glowed softly against the stars. Echo could see it from where she stood, miles from the center of town. Travelers would spot that landmark and know they'd reached Fenif. She smiled. This town had everything—plants that guided lost wanderers home, trees that sheltered tired birds, and symbols that told everyone what mattered here. Her sanctuary would fit right in.
