Chapter 1

Sahira traced her finger over the faded map spread across her bed. Her mother had come from somewhere far beyond the desert, across an ocean she'd never seen. The map showed lands with strange names, but no clear path to answers. Sahira folded the paper carefully and tucked it into her pocket. She would find her mother's homeland, no matter how long it took. Her father had agreed to help her set up a study space. Together they walked to a quiet building with tall pillars and hanging lanterns. Palm trees surrounded it, their leaves rustling in the morning breeze. Inside, colorful pillows lined the floor. A fountain bubbled in the corner. Sahira unpacked the map and placed it on a low table. This would be her place to search for the truth. She pulled out a blank notebook and wrote her first question: Where did my mother come from? The next morning, Sahira headed to the docks. Ships arrived each day carrying goods from distant lands. If her mother came from across the ocean, perhaps something here would give her a clue. She walked past crates and barrels until she spotted workers unloading a large statue. The marble gleamed grey in the sunlight. A woman carved in stone wore a flowing toga, one arm reaching up, the other pressed against her chest. Sahira had never seen anything like it. She stepped closer and noticed marks on the base—letters in a script she didn't recognize. Her heart beat faster. This statue came from somewhere far away, maybe even from her mother's homeland. She copied the strange letters into her notebook and hurried back to her study space. The search had truly begun. Back at the pavilion, Sahira spread out her notebook beside the map. She studied the strange letters again, trying to match them to any markings on her mother's old belongings. A merchant passed by the pavilion entrance carrying a bronze sundial on a pedestal. The metal caught the light as he set it down to rest. Sahira stepped outside and examined the device. Intricate designs covered the pedestal, patterns she'd seen before on a bracelet her mother used to wear. She asked the merchant where it came from. He pointed west, toward the ocean. Sahira thanked him and returned to her cushions. She opened her notebook to a fresh page and drew the sundial's patterns. Each new piece brought her closer to understanding where her mother had lived, what her people valued, and why she'd traveled so far from home.
