Chapter 4

Gryndel padded through a corridor lined with clocks that ticked backward. The dream walker followed close behind, feet uncertain on floors that seemed to shift between tile and cloud. "Balance requires practice in spaces that refuse to stay still," Gryndel purred, tail writing lazy spirals. They stopped at a room where gravity pulled sideways. A chair sat mounted to the wall. "Sit there and feel which direction calls to you—sleeping or waking." The dream walker climbed up and settled into the seat. Their body swayed as both worlds tugged at once. Gryndel's grin stretched wide. "Good. When neither direction wins, you've found your center." After the dream walker climbed down, Gryndel led them outside to where a flower grew between cracked pavement. Its petals shifted colors that had no names, glowing faintly in shades that seemed to exist only when looked at sideways. "Ethereal Whimsy Blossom," Gryndel said, circling the plant. "It grows where sleep and waking touch most often. Stressed minds need it." The dream walker knelt and reached toward the flower. Their fingers trembled less than before. The petals released a scent that made thoughts slow and settle. "When you cross between worlds too many times in one day, find one of these," Gryndel continued. "Let it calm the pull. Your mind needs rest even while it learns to split itself in two." The dream walker breathed deep and nodded. Gryndel's tail curled in satisfaction. Their student understood now—mastery required not just practice, but also knowing when to stop and let both worlds rest. They walked further until mist rolled across the path ahead. Dark indigo swirled with white and gold, thick enough to touch. "Dream Boundary Mist," Gryndel announced, padding straight into the haze. "It marks where reality forgets its own rules." The dream walker hesitated at the edge, watching Gryndel's form blur and sharpen inside the fog. Then they stepped forward. The mist clung to their skin, warm and cool at once. Sounds became muffled. Distance stopped making sense. "This is what crossing feels like from the outside," Gryndel's voice drifted through the fog. "When you move between worlds, others see you wrapped in this. They know you're somewhere else, even while you stand before them." The dream walker turned slowly, watching the mist part and close around their movements. When they emerged on the other side, their expression had changed. They'd felt the boundary from both directions now. Gryndel's yellow eyes gleamed. Their student was ready for deeper lessons. Beyond the mist, a building rose against the sky. Its copper dome caught the light, painted in dark indigo with gold trim. A large telescope jutted from the roof, its lens cracked down the middle. "The Whimsical Observatory," Gryndel said, tail writing question marks in smoke. "Watchers once studied distant realms from here. Places they could never touch with their hands." They pushed through the door. Inside, the telescope's shadow stretched across the floor. Dust motes danced in beams of light that came through the cracked lens, splitting into two paths. The dream walker walked to the base of the telescope and looked up. "They wanted to see what lay beyond their world," Gryndel continued. "You're learning to go there yourself." The dream walker placed both hands on the cold metal. Understanding settled into their bones. Observation wasn't enough anymore. Now came the time for action. Gryndel's grin stretched impossibly wide. Today's lesson was complete—their student had learned that mastery meant more than watching from a distance.
