Declan Rourke wiped blood from his cleaver and hung it on the shop wall. Behind his butcher shop, three homeless kids slept in cardboard boxes. He wanted to teach them his trade—how to cut meat, run a business, earn honest coin. Winter in Yule was harsh, and they needed more than scraps. He stepped outside into the cold morning air. Snow covered the workshop's peaked roof in thick white layers. The old building had good bones—solid wood beams, a proper meat locker, enough counter space for several workers. His father had taught him here. Now he would do the same for those kids. Declan walked to the back alley where the children huddled under torn blankets. The smallest one was already awake, watching him with dark, careful eyes. "You three want breakfast?" Declan asked. "And maybe something better than sleeping in the cold?" The boy nodded slowly. Declan crossed his thick arms over his stained apron. "Then you work. I'll teach you the butcher's trade. You'll learn to use a knife properly, serve customers, keep the books." He paused, letting his words settle. "But you show up every day. You do it right." The boy stood up, waking the others. They looked thin and tired, but their eyes held something Declan recognized—hunger for more than just food.
