Chapter 8

Greg sat at the kitchen table with a new notebook. "We start fresh," he said, tapping his pen against blank paper. "Different approach this time." Linda leaned over his shoulder. They listed every couple who'd ever shown interest—not just the ones who came to meetings. Greg drew columns for names, availability, and what each pair actually needed. Some wanted big group sessions. Others preferred quiet conversations. Linda pulled out her phone and started drafting a message about flexible meeting times and locations. They weren't giving up. They were getting smarter about how to help. Linda looked up from her phone. "Some people won't share in front of others," she said. "They need a private way to ask questions first." Greg nodded and kept writing. They needed something that let couples reach out without feeling exposed. Linda remembered seeing an old post box downtown—sky-blue enamel with brass details and strange glowing symbols etched into the metal. "We could use that," she said. "Let people drop questions in anonymously." Greg added it to the list. Next to it, he drew a small peach-colored box they'd found at a thrift store last week. It had an odd design with carved panels and enough space inside for papers. "That one can hold intake forms," Greg said. "Couples can fill them out and leave them anytime, even when we're not around." Greg stood and walked to the window. "What if someone has a real emergency during a session?" he asked. "We need a way to call for help fast." Linda joined him. Down the street, she could see the old wooden phone booth they'd passed a hundred times. The glass door hung crooked, and the rotary phone inside probably still worked. Most people had cell phones now, but the booth had a direct line—no fumbling with apps or dropped signals. "We install that outside wherever we meet," Linda said. "If things get too intense, we can reach someone right away." Greg wrote it down. The booth was weathered and heavy, but they could move it with help. They sat back down and looked at their list. Three new tools. A way for couples to ask questions privately. A secure place for paperwork. A phone for emergencies. Linda sent the message about flexible meetings and added a note about the anonymous post box. Within ten minutes, four couples responded. One asked where to find it. Another thanked them for making things easier. Greg closed the notebook and looked at Linda. "This feels right," he said. "We're not just running meetings anymore. We're building something that works for people who need it." Linda smiled. They still had work to do, but now they had a real plan to move forward.
