Rumi Cookiestealer wiped flour from her glasses and smiled at the empty storefront. The windows were grimy, and the floor needed work, but she could already picture it. Little tables for snacks. Soft mats for story time. A safe place where neighborhood kids could learn and play while their parents worked. She wanted to run the most trusted childcare service in Fenif, right here in this struggling part of town where families needed it most. She pulled three pink boxes from her bag and lined them up near the door. Each box had a label she'd written in bold letters: TOYS, CLOTHES, and SUPPLIES. Families around here needed help, and she needed items to fill her future childcare center. The boxes would collect donations from anyone willing to share. Rumi stepped back and looked at them, then at the empty room beyond. Her dream was taking its first real steps. She grabbed her broom and got to work on the floors. An hour later, dust covered her sweater and boots. The main room looked bigger now that she'd swept it clean. Rumi dragged two couches through the front door, one pink and one golden. She'd found them at a yard sale that morning. The colors didn't match, but both were soft and sturdy. Parents would need somewhere comfortable to sit when they picked up their kids. A place where neighbors could rest and talk while they waited. She arranged them facing each other and sat down on the pink one. The springs creaked but held. Good enough. She looked around at the donation boxes by the door and the couches in the middle of the room. Her childcare center was starting to feel real. Outside, footsteps passed by the storefront window. Rumi stood and walked to the glass. A woman carrying groceries glanced inside, then kept walking. A man with two small children hurried past without looking. They didn't know what this place would become yet. But they would. She turned back to face the empty room with its mismatched couches and pink donation boxes. This building would grow into something the whole neighborhood could count on. She pushed her glasses up and smiled. The work had just begun.
