Astra crouched beside the bunker and watched the baby sleep inside. The small creature's chest rose and fell in steady rhythm. She had done it. Three nights ago, she carried the baby across the floating islands while the researchers worked in their lab. Now the baby rested safe in the metal shelter, far from their experiments. The days that followed brought small victories. The baby grew stronger, eating the safe foods Astra gathered from the floating islands. Its fur brightened. Its eyes looked clearer each morning. Other creatures began to arrive—animals who had also escaped the research station's cold rooms and testing chambers. Astra guided them to the sanctuary, a wide space with soft ground and fresh water. Here, they could rest without fear. The baby played with the others now, running through the glowing vines. The sanctuary worked. Her plan had actually worked. Word of the safe place spread across the islands. More animals came, and each one reminded Astra why she had taken the risk. She stood near the metal bunker one morning and saw something new—a statue carved from white and pink stone. Another mouse had placed it there during the night, a gift to honor what she had done. The stone mouse's big eyes stared out toward the research station, a silent guardian watching for danger. Astra touched the statue's smooth surface with one paw. Nearby, another figure stood tall—a metal guardian with wings spread wide, protecting smaller creatures gathered at its base. The animals in the sanctuary had built it together, piece by piece. These monuments told a story. They marked her choice to act instead of hide. The baby was safe. The sanctuary thrived. For the first time since the rescue, Astra let herself believe they might actually stay that way.
