Chapter 2
Captain Voidrift stood in the empty canyon, boots crunching on rust-colored dirt. The wrecked spacecraft hulls stretched out before him like metal bones. He needed to start somewhere—anywhere. First, he had to clear space for the foundation. Then he'd need water and power running to the site. He rolled up his sleeves and grabbed a plasma cutter from his pack. The first beam came free with a shower of sparks. One piece of scrap metal at a time, his outpost would rise from this wasteland.
A week passed. The foundation was laid and power lines hummed beneath the surface. But Captain Voidrift needed more than a building. He needed people who could feed him information about patrol routes, cargo manifests, and rival operations. Without intelligence, his outpost would fail before it even opened. He climbed into his hover transport and drove three hours to the far edge of the canyon lands. There, built into a cliff face of rust-orange rock, stood a weathered structure that looked abandoned. The walls matched the alien landscape perfectly. He knocked twice, then once more. A panel slid open. Inside, an informant waited in the shadows, ready to trade secrets for coin. Captain Voidrift stepped through the doorway. His network was beginning to form, one careful contact at a time. The outpost would need eyes everywhere, and this safe house would be where those eyes reported back.
Back at the construction site, Captain Voidrift faced a new problem. The saloon's black market tech would drain more power than basic lines could handle. Scanners, encrypted comms, hidden security systems—all of it needed constant energy. He unpacked the fusion generator from its transport crate. The metallic device gleamed in the canyon sun, its sleek surface humming with contained power. He dug a pit outside the half-built structure and lowered the generator into place. Cables ran from the unit into the saloon's wall. When he threw the switch, lights flickered to life inside. Systems powered up with a low buzz. His outpost now had the strength to run everything it needed. The foundation was solid, the informants were connecting, and power flowed through every circuit. Captain Voidrift wiped the dust from his hands and looked at the rising walls. His dream was taking shape, one crucial piece at a time.
The next challenge arrived with the first shipment. Three cargo haulers pulled up with crates stacked high—weapons, tech, contraband that needed quick transfer into storage. Captain Voidrift couldn't have smugglers out in the open for long. He activated the concealed cargo lifter he'd installed near the loading area. The sleek device blended into the ground, nearly invisible until it powered on. It lifted a heavy crate with a quiet hum and moved it through the entrance in seconds. The haulers nodded their approval and drove off. Captain Voidrift watched them disappear into the canyon. His outpost could now handle goods, information, and power. The pieces were all connecting. What started as a dream sketched on metal was now real walls, real systems, and real business. The Smugglers' Spaceport Saloon was ready to open its doors.
