Chapter 1

Rex Scale-Claw scattered feed across the dirt pen, watching his dino-chickens peck at the ground. The small dinosaurs clucked and scratched with their tiny claws. Rex dreamed of breeding the perfect champion, one that would win the Stone Feather competition in Cutlass Valley. His orange eyes tracked each bird carefully, looking for signs of strength and grace. But feeding them wasn't enough. Rex knew champions needed real training. He spent the morning building an agility course behind the pen. He hammered wooden poles into the ground and stretched rope between them. He stacked old crates to make hurdles. The course looked rough but sturdy. Rex stepped back and wiped sweat from his scaled brow. He grabbed his fastest dino-chicken, a speckled female named Dash. She squawked as he placed her at the start of the course. Rex clapped his hands, and Dash sprinted forward. She leaped over the first crate, stumbled at the rope, then recovered. Not perfect, but it was a start. Rex grinned, showing his sharp teeth. This was how champions were made. After running Dash through the course three more times, Rex walked to his workshop. He needed something to show off his best bird when the judges came. He found old planks and a thick post in the corner. Rex sawed and hammered for an hour. The pedestal took shape, rough around the edges but solid. He carved prehistoric patterns into the sides with his claws. The platform stood waist-high, just right for displaying a dino-chicken. Rex placed Dash on top to test it. She ruffled her feathers and stood tall. Rex nodded. The Stone Feather competition was still weeks away, but he was ready to start preparing. His dream felt closer now. Rex had seen the Cutlass Valley Festival Dome once before, three years ago. The huge building sat at the edge of town, decorated with carved stones and painted banners. Inside, farmers showed their best animals to crowds and judges. Winners stood on platforms while everyone cheered. Rex had watched from the back, too nervous to enter his birds. But this time would be different. He looked at Dash standing proud on her display pedestal. He thought about the training course waiting in the yard. Rex adjusted his worn straw hat and headed back outside. He had work to do, and champions didn't build themselves.
