Chapter 2

The Queen of Hearts needed to start somewhere, and words would be her first weapon. She stood before a small wooden podium she'd placed in an open square. Her fingers gripped the gold railings as she practiced projecting her voice across the empty space. "Off with their heads!" she shouted, letting the words echo off nearby walls. Too shrill. She tried again, lower and sharper. "You are all late, and lateness costs a head per second." Better. Her mechanical heart ticked steadily in her chest, keeping time with her breathing. She repeated commands until her throat felt raw. Royal decrees. Execution orders. Rules that would change whenever she pleased. Each phrase had to sound final, like a judge's hammer coming down. A few passersby glanced her way but kept walking. That would change. Soon they would stop and listen. Soon they would tremble at every syllable. She smiled and straightened her crown. A queen's voice had to be sharp enough to cut through any crowd. But calling them one by one would waste precious synchronized seconds. She needed something louder, something that couldn't be ignored. The next morning, she found a man who worked with brass and gold. She showed him a sketch she'd drawn—a trumpet in gleaming gold with dark indigo and magenta ribbons hanging from its bell. White tassels would frame it perfectly. "Make it loud enough to reach every corner," she commanded. The man nodded and got to work. Three days later, he delivered the finished trumpet. She lifted it to her lips and blew. The sound split the air like a blade, clear and demanding. Windows rattled. Doors opened. People stepped outside to see what caused such noise. The Queen lowered the trumpet and watched them gather. Her mechanical heart ticked faster with satisfaction. Now she could summon her future subjects whenever she pleased. Now they would come when she called, or they would learn what tardiness cost. A queen who could summon subjects would need guards to protect her. And guards needed weapons close at hand. She commissioned a storage cabinet with twisted gold hinges and magenta panels. Dark indigo shadows painted across its doors made it look dangerous even when closed. Inside, she arranged crossbows on one side and swords on the other. White handles gleamed against the dark wood. The weapons waited ready for when her throne room became real. She ran her fingers along a sword's edge and smiled. Her future guards would pull these from the cabinet when threats appeared. They would defend her commands with steel and force. The Queen stepped back and admired her work. She had a voice that could cut. A trumpet that could summon. And now, weapons that could enforce. Her kingdom was no longer just a dream—it was becoming something her subjects would fear. But fear required more than loud voices and sharp swords. She needed to learn how rulers made people obey. The Queen found a chamber tucked away from crowds, lit by a single bright lamp that hung from the ceiling. She dragged a chair beneath it and sat down, staring up into the light until her eyes watered. Then she stood and circled the chair slowly, practicing the questions a queen must ask. "Why were you late? Do you think my time means nothing?" Her voice grew colder with each word. She imagined a servant sitting in that chair, squirming under the light, searching for answers that wouldn't come. This was where she would learn to control through fear instead of force. The mechanical heart in her chest ticked louder as she paced. She asked more questions into the empty room. Each one sharper than the last. When she finally left the chamber, she knew something important—words could hurt worse than any blade, and a queen who mastered both would never be disobeyed.
