Chapter 1

Sensei Wu swept the training yard as dawn broke over Thistlebrook. His bamboo broom scraped against the stone tiles in steady strokes. Dust swirled around his sandals. He paused and looked across the empty space where his students would soon stand. For fifty years, he had trained warriors to defend the realm. Each generation learned the ancient forms, the discipline, the honor. But time was running short. His bones ached more each morning. The realm needed new protectors, and he needed to find them fast. He set the broom against the wall and walked to the center of the yard. Today, he would begin his search for the next generation. The old training yard would not be enough. Wu circled the space, counting his steps. Too small for what he needed. He walked to the eastern edge of his property and stopped. Here, the ground was level and wide. Here, he could build something greater. He pictured walls rising from the earth, colorful and strong. A dojo with rooms for meditation, spaces for combat, and halls for teaching wisdom. The building would stand as a home for warriors, a place where they could grow from students into protectors. Wu knelt and pressed his palm against the dirt. Tomorrow, he would gather materials and begin construction. The realm's future defenders needed a proper place to train, and he would give them one. Wu spent three weeks building the dojo brick by brick. Red walls rose beside blue columns. Green tiles formed the roof. Each piece clicked into place until the structure stood complete. Inside, he built separate rooms for different purposes. One hall held mats for combat training. Another space opened wide for meditation. He stood in the main chamber and nodded. The dojo would work. But his students would need more than combat skills and calm minds. They would need strength. Real strength that came from pushing their bodies past comfort. Wu walked into town and found an empty building near the market. The owner agreed to let him use it. Wu filled the space with weights and platforms, all built from colorful bricks. Bars hung from the ceiling. Blocks stacked high for lifting. He tested one stack himself and felt his muscles strain. Perfect. His future warriors would train their minds in the dojo and build their bodies here. Now he just needed to find them. Wu returned to the dojo and walked through each room one final time. Something was missing. Warriors needed targets. They needed to practice their strikes until muscle became memory. He gathered wood and bundled straw tight with rope. The training dummy took shape under his hands. He mounted it on a wooden post and tested it with a palm strike. The dummy wobbled but held firm. Wu built three more and placed them throughout the combat hall. His students would strike these until their hands grew strong and their aim stayed true. He stepped back and surveyed everything he had created. The dojo stood ready. The gym waited with its challenges. The training dummies offered themselves for countless strikes. All the pieces were in place. Now he would walk through Thistlebrook and watch. He would find young people with fire in their eyes and courage in their hearts. The search would begin tomorrow at first light.
