Captain Raymond Clark baited his hook at the edge of the dock, his weathered hands moving with practiced ease. The morning fog hung thick over the water, and somewhere across the mire, he could hear laughter—the kind that cut deep. They were mocking Linda-Lee again, his boat, calling her a rust bucket held together by prayers and stubbornness. Raymond's jaw tightened. He'd show them all what a real fisherman could do. The dock marketplace sprawled behind him, a jumble of workbenches made from broken doors and scrap lumber. This was where he'd make his stand. Each stall leaned at odd angles, but they held steady through wind and rain. Raymond had claimed a corner bench weeks ago, and from there he'd sell his catch. The rival fishermen worked from their fancy boats with clean decks and shiny equipment. They sold at the proper fish markets downtown. But Raymond would prove that skill mattered more than appearances. He'd haul in bigger catches, better fish, until even those laughing voices had to admit he knew these waters. The respect would come, one fish at a time. He cast his line with a clean flick of his wrist. The old fishing pole bent slightly under the motion. Two tackle boxes sat at his feet, filled with lures and hooks he'd collected over the years. Old lanterns hung from posts along the dock's edge, left over from the previous night's work. Raymond watched the water ripple where his line had entered. A crowd would gather here soon, locals buying their daily fish. They'd see him land something big. They'd watch him work. And word would spread fast in a place like this.
