Roxy Soundwave crouched behind the school dumpster, watching the black sedan circle the parking lot for the third time. Her little brother was still inside at band practice. She had to keep him safe from the people who wanted what their parents left behind. The sedan finally drove away. Roxy pulled out her phone and texted her brother to meet her at the old abandoned house on the edge of town. The pink and white building looked like a cartoon character's dream home, with bow decorations and round windows. Nobody ever went there anymore. It was perfect for hiding. She jogged through the back streets, checking over her shoulder every few blocks. Near the entrance, she spotted a security camera tucked inside a thick bush. Someone had been watching this place. Her stomach dropped. She moved closer and saw the lens was cracked and covered in dust. It hadn't worked in years. Inside, Roxy found the tower room upstairs. A yellow sticky note was stuck to the wall with three words: "I'll watch your back." The handwriting looked familiar, like her mom's. Her chest tightened. Maybe her parents had used this place too. She peeled off the note and put it in her pocket. This house would keep them safe until she figured out what to do next.
