Chapter 1

Clementine pushed open the bakery door at dawn, flour already dusting her yellow apron. She'd spent another night alone in the apartment above the shop, dreaming of something more than empty rooms and silent meals. What she wanted was simple—people who would stay, who would laugh at her jokes and remember how she liked her tea. A real family, not the kind that leaves. Here in Kokj, surrounded by neighbors who ordered bread but never lingered to talk, she kneaded dough and hoped that someday, someone would see her and decide to stay. By mid-morning, she'd heard about the cottage. A customer mentioned it while paying for sourdough—an angular building near the beach desert, abandoned for months. Clementine's heart jumped. She could picture it already: a place where friends would gather, where the door would always be open. After closing the bakery early, she hiked through the dunes until she found it. The Sand Surfing Cottage sat empty, its sharp lines cutting against the sand. She touched the door frame and smiled. The next day, she discovered the study tucked behind a heavy wooden door inside the cottage. Dark shelves lined the walls, and the air felt thick with old magic. It wasn't cheerful like her bakery, but something about it felt right. This could be where people sat together, sharing meals and stories late into the night. She dragged in a table she'd found in the main room—a strange piece covered in glass panels that held old music records underneath. The Vinyl Vault Table, heavy and odd, became her centerpiece. Here, she could show people who she really was. Clementine stood in the study as sunset light filtered through the windows. The cottage wasn't perfect, and she had no guests yet. But she'd found the place where her new family would gather. All she needed now was the courage to invite them in. She ran her fingers across the glass tabletop and made herself a promise—she would open her door, and she would wait for the people who would choose to stay.
