Glim stood at his practice table in the hall and pulled out his deck. His webbed fingers moved through the shuffle without hesitation now. The cards flowed from hand to hand, smooth and controlled. A magician walking past slowed down to watch. She nodded once before moving on. Glim's tentacles curled with quiet pride. Three weeks of constant practice had changed everything. The next morning, he walked through the plaza and spotted something he'd never seen before. Giant playing cards stood upright in a circle, each one glowing with neon colors that pulsed and shifted. Pink bled into blue, then green, then orange. The cards towered over him, arranged like ancient stones in a pattern that demanded respect. Glim walked between them and read the inscription carved at the base. It listed magicians who had perfected their signature tricks. His orange eyes moved down the names, one after another. These performers had done what he was trying to do—they'd found their one perfect move and made it flawless. He pulled out his deck and executed his shuffle right there, standing in the center of the glowing cards. His fingers moved without shaking. The cards fell into place exactly as they should. Later that afternoon, Glim found himself standing before a massive archway that glowed bright orange. The structure framed the entrance to a building he'd passed before but never entered. The orange light pulsed with energy, making the air around it feel charged. He walked through it and felt something shift inside him. This wasn't just an entrance—it was a threshold. On the other side, magicians performed for small crowds, testing new material and refining old tricks. Glim found an empty spot near the wall and ran through his shuffle three times in a row. Each time, the cards moved faster and cleaner. A small group gathered to watch his third attempt. When he finished, two of them tapped their fingers against their palms in quiet approval. Glim tucked his deck away and walked back through the glowing archway. Three months had felt impossible when he arrived. Now, standing in Zyzzle Junction with progress in his hands, it felt like just enough time.
