Chapter 2
Gryndel circled the dream walker slowly, tail writing small spirals of smoke in the air. "First lesson," they purred, yellow eyes gleaming. "Reality hiccups when you cross between worlds. You need to feel the difference." They pressed one paw against the dream walker's chest. "Sleeping pulls inward. Waking pushes out. Notice which way you're being tugged." The dream walker closed their eyes and breathed deep. Their body swayed slightly. Gryndel's grin widened. "Good. Now hold that feeling. Tomorrow we practice the crossing itself."
The next morning, Gryndel led the dream walker back to the floating bed. The frame hovered in the air, its patterns swirling in dark indigo and gold. "Today you learn the anchor," Gryndel said, whiskers twitching. "When you cross too deep, you need something to hold you." The dream walker climbed onto the bed and lay down. Their body began to float upward, nightgown billowing around them. Gryndel's tail wrote new smoke patterns, these ones glowing faintly. "Feel the bed beneath you," Gryndel called up. "It keeps you connected. It remembers where your body belongs." The dream walker drifted higher, eyes closed, breathing slow. Then they stopped rising. Their fingers gripped the sheets. Gryndel's grin stretched wider. "Yes. That's it. You found your tether." The dream walker opened their eyes and looked down at Gryndel. Understanding crossed their face. They lowered back onto the bed, still holding the sheets tight. "Every crossing needs an anchor," Gryndel said. "Now you know how to stay safe while you practice."
Later, Gryndel padded toward a glass display case filled with vials. The containers gleamed in shades of white, magenta, gold, and dark indigo. "Dream essence," Gryndel explained, tapping the glass with one claw. "Collected from the space between sleeping and waking. You'll need these to strengthen your crossings." The dream walker approached and stared at the swirling liquids inside each vial. "When you practice tomorrow, you'll drink one before you cross," Gryndel continued. "It helps reality remember you exist in both places at once." The dream walker reached out and touched the case. Gryndel's tail curled in satisfaction. Their student understood the basics now—the pull between worlds, the need for an anchor, and the tools that made crossing safer. The real work could begin.
Gryndel led the dream walker down a corridor that twisted in impossible angles. They stopped before a building with mirrored walls and crooked doorways. "The clinic," Gryndel announced, pushing through the entrance. Inside, beds lined the walls at different heights. Some floated, some sat sideways. "This is where you practice crossing without consequence." The dream walker stepped inside and looked around. Gryndel hopped onto a tilted table. "Here, if you get stuck between worlds, I can pull you back. Reality bends softer in this space." The dream walker nodded and chose a bed. They lay down and closed their eyes. Gryndel watched as their student's breathing slowed, then steadied. The dream walker was learning to control the shift. Gryndel's yellow eyes gleamed with pride. The foundation was set. Soon, the real lessons would begin.
