Chapter 5

Richard stood in the fort's meeting room, watching recruits file in for their first briefing. Ten new faces, all volunteers from nearby settlements. He'd spent weeks reaching out through trade posts and word of mouth, and now they were here. He opened his old CO's field manual and read the first lesson aloud: "Trust is earned in teaspoons and lost in gallons." The recruits straightened in their chairs. Richard closed the book and gestured toward the door. "You'll train hard here. You'll learn what it means to wear this uniform." He showed them the scars on his forearm, white lines from an ambush years back. "I won't ask you to do anything I haven't done myself." One recruit nodded slowly. Another leaned forward, eyes locked on Richard's. He could see it in their faces—they wanted this. They wanted to become Rangers. Richard dismissed them to the barracks and watched them go. The fort had its foundation. Now it had its future too. Three weeks later, Richard stood before a grey marble stone near the armory entrance. Workers had just finished carving the Rangers' motto and values into its surface. He ran his fingers across the words, feeling the grooves. Every Ranger would pass this stone on their way to gear up. They'd read these principles until the words became part of them. Richard stepped back and adjusted his cap. The stone was permanent, solid—just like what he was building here. The first four recruits completed their training on a cold morning in early spring. Richard gathered the entire fort in front of the renovated barracks—its camouflaged roof freshly painted in green, yellow, and gray. He called each graduate forward by name and handed them their Ranger patches. Their hands shook as they pinned the badges to their uniforms. When the ceremony ended, Richard led them to the bell tower in the center of the grounds. Its bronze bell gleamed in the sunlight. "Ring it," he said. The first new Ranger grabbed the rope and pulled. The bell's sound rolled across the fort and out toward the village. Three more chimes followed. Richard watched the pride on their faces and felt something settle in his chest. The fort wasn't just walls and training grounds anymore. It was a place where people became something better. Richard walked back to his office as the bell's echo faded. He opened his CO's field manual and added a new entry beneath the old lessons: "Progress is built one Ranger at a time." He closed the book and looked out the window at the fort. The base was growing. The mission was taking shape. Everything he'd worked for was coming together.
