Chapter 1
Gryndel Cheshire padded through the twisted corridors of Demented Dreamland, yellow eyes scanning for signs of the dream walker. Their striped tail swished behind them as they moved. The dream walker needed help, and Gryndel had the skills to teach them. Control between waking and sleeping worlds didn't come easy. But Gryndel knew the tricks, the paths, the secrets. They just had to find their student first.
A shimmer caught Gryndel's attention ahead. They stopped and tilted their head. There, suspended in the air, floated a bed covered in white, gold, magenta, and dark indigo patterns. The designs swirled across the frame in loops and spirals. Gryndel's grin widened, showing rows of sharp teeth. This was it—the threshold between worlds. The dream walker would cross through here, trapped between sleeping and waking. Gryndel sat down to wait, tail curling around their paws.
The bed began to pulse with light. Someone was trying to cross. Gryndel stood and approached the floating frame. Their student would arrive soon, confused and scared. But Gryndel would be ready. They would teach the dream walker how to move between both worlds without losing themselves. It was time to begin the lessons.
A figure materialized on the bed, tangled in sheets and gasping. Gryndel's whiskers twitched. The dream walker had arrived at last. "Welcome," Gryndel purred, their voice smooth as silk. "You've been drifting between worlds without direction. That ends now." The dream walker's eyes went wide as they stared at the blue-furred cat. Gryndel gestured with one paw toward a structure that rose from the ground nearby. Mirrored walls reflected dozens of versions of them both. Concrete floors stretched beneath neon signs that buzzed and flickered in magenta, dark indigo, white, and gold. The academy stood waiting, ready to house their training. "This is where you'll learn," Gryndel said. "Here, you'll master both waking and sleeping. No more getting lost." The dream walker sat up slowly, recognition dawning in their face. They nodded once, determination replacing fear. Gryndel pointed to a radio box mounted on the academy's wall. The metal speaker grille gleamed under the neon lights. "Others are struggling too," Gryndel said. "When you master control, you'll share what you learn through that. Help them find their way." The dream walker climbed down from the floating bed and stood on solid ground. They looked at Gryndel, then at the academy, then back again. Ready to begin.
