Chapter 3

Gryndel's tail traced symbols in the air as they led the dream walker to a new location. The structures here shifted between solid and translucent, walls flickering like candle flames. "You've learned to cross safely," Gryndel purred, yellow eyes bright. "Now you need to understand where the crossing takes you." They stopped before a doorway that rippled like water. "Beyond this threshold lies the Path of Whispers. Walk it, and you'll see where dreams actually go when sleepers forget them." The dream walker stepped through, and the world split into layers—one foot in waking, one in sleeping. Gryndel followed, grin stretching wide. "Feel how both worlds touch here? This is what you'll master. The places where reality bubbles and pops." The dream walker's eyes widened as forgotten dreams drifted past like smoke. Gryndel's whiskers twitched with satisfaction. Their student was beginning to see the true landscape between worlds, the spaces that would make control possible. Gryndel led the dream walker further down the path until they reached a fountain. A metal seesaw balanced perfectly over flowing water, painted in dark indigo, gold, magenta, and white. The seesaw didn't move, held in exact equilibrium. "This marks the gateway," Gryndel said, circling the fountain. "When you master both realms equally, you'll stand here without tipping either way." The dream walker reached out and touched the seesaw. It held steady under their fingertips. "Others have done it before you," Gryndel continued. "They learned to exist fully in both places at once. No pulling, no pushing. Just balance." They walked to a café with large windows and mismatched chairs. Inside, three people sat at different tables, speaking in low voices. One traced patterns on a napkin. Another stared at their reflection in a teacup. The third tapped their fingers in an uneven rhythm. "Listen," Gryndel whispered, tail curling around the dream walker's ankle. The conversations drifted over—fragments about falling sideways through sleep, waking up in yesterday, touching sounds that tasted purple. "These are your people," Gryndel said. "They walk between worlds too, but without guidance. When you finish your training, you'll help them find their anchors." Near the clinic, an incinerator burned with bright orange flames. Smoke curled upward, forming question marks before dissolving. Ash danced in spirals, catching light from the fire. The dream walker stopped and watched the patterns. "Curiosity draws them here," Gryndel said, yellow eyes reflecting the flames. "They see the smoke and wonder what burns inside. That wondering opens doors between sleeping and waking." The dream walker nodded slowly, understanding settling in their expression. This world held everything they needed—markers of mastery, others who struggled with crossing, and places where reality thinned enough to practice safely. Gryndel's grin stretched wide. Their student could see the path forward now, every landmark pointing toward control.
