Chapter 1

Sparky Tizz checked the manifest on her datapad one more time. Three crates of plasma charges, two fusion cores, and one experimental stellar igniter sat locked in her ship's reinforced hold. She grinned at the haul—Class-7 volatiles that could level a city block if she sneezed wrong. This was exactly the kind of job that would build her reputation as the hauler for dangerous explosive contracts. The delivery point was a storage facility on Toodle Loo, and she'd already landed her ship in the loading zone. Now came the tricky part—getting the cargo off without turning herself into a crater. A Quantum Lift forklift hummed into position beside her ship's cargo ramp. The machine's anti-grav stabilizers kicked in with a soft whir. Sparky watched the operator guide the first crate of plasma charges onto the platform with steady hands. She'd moved volatile cargo herself plenty of times, but having proper equipment made the job almost boring. Almost. The fusion cores slid onto the forklift next, their containment fields glowing a faint blue. One delivery down, and forty more like it would get her name whispered in every dangerous cargo circle from here to the outer stations. The last crate cleared the ramp, and Sparky slapped the ship's hull twice. Her Futuristic Space Freight Truck sat parked nearby, waiting for the next run into the hazardous zones where most haulers refused to go. That's where the real money lived—the remote routes with bad roads and worse clients. She'd learned her trade watching mining crews mess up simple demolition jobs, and she'd perfected it through six years of lost eyebrows and near-death experiences. Every successful delivery meant one more client who knew her name, one more contract that proved she could handle what others couldn't. The storage facility crew signed off on the delivery, and Sparky pocketed the payment chip. Her truck's engine would be warm before the hour ended. She needed a real base of operations if she wanted to scale up. Running contracts from her ship worked fine for small jobs, but the big players wanted someone they could find. Sparky headed toward the Galactic Employment Hub she'd spotted during her approach. The building's clean lines and busy entrance told her this was where deals got made. She pushed through the doors and scanned the posted listings—cargo brokers, freight coordinators, contract managers. A small office space in the corner sat empty with a rental sign. Perfect size for one person and a datapad. She could run her whole operation from here, take calls, vet clients, and build the kind of reputation that brought the dangerous jobs straight to her door. Sparky pulled out her payment chip and smiled.
