Chapter 3

Lord Richard locked the headquarters door behind him and stepped into the morning streets. His investigation needed more than files and observation posts. He needed to understand how criminals moved through Aristocratic Arbors itself. The neighborhood held secrets in its layout—back alleys where goods could be smuggled, wealthy estates that made tempting targets, public squares where information changed hands. He walked north toward the commercial district, studying each intersection and side street. A coffee house on the corner caught his attention. Men in fine coats sat at tables near the windows, discussing business over steaming cups. This was where merchants gathered, where deals happened, where a careful listener could learn which shops faced trouble. Richard entered and ordered coffee, taking a seat where he could watch and listen. The world itself would teach him what he needed to know. Two hours of careful listening revealed three shops struggling with theft. Richard left the coffee house and continued his walk. The town center opened before him, and he stopped at a tall stone statue. Carved figures of investigators and lawkeepers stood frozen in triumph. Their stone faces showed determination. These were the legendary crime-fighters who had protected the town in years past. Richard studied each figure, noting their posture and bearing. They had succeeded where others failed. The statue proved that Aristocratic Arbors valued justice. His work here mattered. The assembly hall stood across the square, its columns rising toward the cloudy sky. Richard climbed the steps and entered through the main doors. Inside, voices echoed off marble walls. Town leaders stood in clusters, discussing trade and politics. This was where influence lived. He needed access to these people, to their knowledge and connections. A robbery investigation required more than observation. It required allies who could open doors and share secrets. Richard moved through the hall, listening to conversations, learning who held power. By afternoon, Richard knew what came next. He returned to his headquarters and drafted a notice. The town needed to know he offered detective services. Citizens with information deserved a place to report crimes. He would have a sign made and placed where people gathered. His investigation was taking shape—a headquarters for evidence, observation posts for criminal activity, knowledge of the town's layout, and now a way for citizens to reach him. Each piece brought him closer to dismantling the organized crime network. The work was just beginning, but the foundation was solid.
