Hoppers Hopper folded a strip of red paper between his paws. His whiskers twitched as he studied the crease. For three years, he had practiced the ancient art of ceremonial lantern making. Every fold mattered. Every cut had to be precise. Tonight was the village competition, and he wanted to create something perfect. He set the paper down and looked around his workshop. Bright bolts of silk lined the shelves. Paper in every shade of red hung from wooden racks. Bamboo frames leaned against the wall in neat rows. This space held everything he needed to master his craft. The morning sun streamed through the window, lighting up specks of dust in the air. Hoppers walked to the Fire Safety Pavilion across the path. Inside, he tested different oils and wicks under careful watch. The flame from rice oil burned steady and clean. The cotton wick held its shape without smoking. He made notes in his small book, recording what worked best. Safe flames would make his lanterns glow without danger. By afternoon, he carried three finished lanterns to the Rabbit Pavilion. The structure stood decorated with painted rabbits leaping across red panels. Villagers gathered to see the early entries. Hoppers hung his lanterns from the hooks and stepped back. People stopped to look. Some nodded. Others whispered to each other. He watched their faces and listened to their words. Each comment would help him improve before tonight's final judging.
