Blem hauled another bucket of ore from the dark tunnel, his father's bent-brimmed hat shading eyes that saw omens in every shadow. The mine paid enough to keep him fed, but his real dream waited in the corral behind his shack—three mules he was breeding for strength and steady feet on narrow mountain trails. The best pack animals would fetch real money from traders who needed to cross the peaks, and Blem knew bloodlines better than he knew gold veins. His lantern flickered though the air hung still, and he paused to read the sign. The mountain was restless tonight. He set down the bucket and walked away from the mine entrance. The barn stood waiting, its wooden walls weathered but solid. Inside, his three mules shifted in their stalls. He'd built this place with his own hands, board by board, to house the animals that would make his name. This was where the real work happened—not in the tunnels, but here with the bloodlines. Blem pulled the adjustable harness from its hook on the wall. Brass buckles caught the lamplight as he fitted the leather straps across the nearest mule's back. He tightened one strap, then loosened another, checking how the weight would sit on steep climbs. Each animal needed different adjustments. The harness had to fit perfect or the mule would stumble when the trail turned narrow. Tomorrow he'd mark the training route with stacked stones, cairns that would guide him and the mules through the hardest slopes. The animals needed to know these paths by heart. They needed strong backs and calm minds for the peaks where one wrong step meant death. Blem ran his hand along the mule's shoulder, feeling the muscle beneath. This was the dream worth chasing—not gold that called men to graves, but animals bred to survive where others failed.
