Chapter 3

The device worked on Ali. That was the whole trouble. He strapped the mesh to his own chest and stepped into the courtyard at dawn. The sun rose over the stone. His skin held. No smoke, no burning. He laughed once, then stopped. The Mother could walk in daylight already. She was a witch, not a vampire. But every other vampire needed this, and his mesh shielded only the body that wore it. One pendant, one flow, one man. He needed the light to spread past his own skin. He carried the problem to the dark laboratory desk in the Hall of Monsters. Glass tubes glowed blue along its back. He sketched a wider mesh, then a second one wired to the first. Both times the flow split and died. The pendant gave power for one field. Divided in two, neither field held. He worked three nights and burned out four coils. The gold could not feed two bodies at once. The cold came before the door opened. The Mother entered, her veil dragging behind her across the stone floor. She was Dracula's chief wife, the witch who hid all of Walachia from human eyes, and the only one who could pull a stake from a heart. She had given him the pendant. She watched his ruined coils without a word. "It shields me and no one else," Ali said. "I cannot split the field. Every clan needs this. I have made a device for one." The Mother lifted a dead coil. "You keep asking the gold to do the work," she said. "It cannot. The gold only holds the light." She set the coil down. "Stop feeding the field. Feed the vampire." Ali went still. He had built a shield to sit outside the body. The Mother meant something else. Not a field around a man, but the power sunk into the man himself, the way a witch stored moonlight in stone worn close to the skin. "A charged stone for each vampire," Ali said slowly. "Worn against the flesh. My device only charges them." "One machine," she said. "Many stones." He worked through the night beside her. He rebuilt the mesh into a cradle. The pendant fed it. Into the cradle he set a plain moon-stone. By dawn the stone drank a full charge. He tied it under his sleeve and walked into the courtyard. The sun struck him. He did not burn. He handed a second charged stone to a young vampire from the market. She stepped out beside him, shaking, and stood whole in the light. Two vampires in daylight. Then Ali looked at his cradle. Each stone burned out fast under the sun. To arm a clan he would need hundreds, charged one by one. The pendant emptied a little more with every stone. And Dracula would feel that gold grow light.
