Chapter 1

Amara Darjeeling had steeped the same failure sixty times, and she needed her mother's face by nightfall. She sold memory blends at Timeless Tea, cups that let a drinker walk back into one lost moment. Her own memory refused to brew. She wanted to see her mother folding a tea cloth, the way she had as a child. Three notebooks held her failures. She had stopped counting after the second. She held her clockwork cup and watched the tiny hand tick. The cup measured steeping to the second, because a blurred second blurred the whole memory. Today the leaf itself was the problem. Every blend she tried died in the same over-steeped batch. The dried leaves had sat too long. They wilted before they could carry a full memory. No matter how she counted the seconds, the tea gave her only gray smoke and nothing to see. The bell above her door rang. Mademoiselle Cocoa Beans swept in, red curls escaping her top hat, gears winking along the brim. The chocolatier was Amara's friend, and she never entered a room quietly. She dropped a paper bag on the counter and grinned. "You're brewing the dead again," she said. "I can smell it. Burnt gold and sorrow." "I can't hold her long enough," Amara said. "The leaf gives out first." Cocoa Beans peered into the steaming cup and wrinkled her nose. "Old leaf. Tired leaf. You keep asking a wilted thing to remember." She spun the paper bag toward Amara. "I steep too, you know. Not tea. But the same trouble. My grandmother never dried her cacao. She woke it." "Woke it," Amara repeated. "Fresh off the branch, still breathing!" Cocoa Beans threw up her hands. "A living thing carries more. Dried things only carry a shadow. You want your mother whole? Give her something alive to ride." Amara stared at her ruined batch. Every blend she owned came from a dried tin. She had never once brewed from a living leaf. She thought of the small clockwork planter in her back window, where a tea shrub grew under glass. She had kept it for beauty. She had never picked it. She walked to the window and pinched one green leaf free. It was warm and damp against her fingers. She dropped it into the clockwork cup and set the hand for forty seconds. The water went dark, then clear. Not smoke this time. Steam. She drank. For three breaths she stood in a kitchen she had not seen in years. Her mother's hands moved. A white cloth folded once, twice, corner to corner. Then the leaf gave out and the kitchen faded. But she had seen the hands. The fresh leaf held. Amara set down the cup, shaking. She had her answer. She needed living leaf, and far more of it than one shrub could give. "You're welcome," Cocoa Beans sang, already halfway out the door.
