Chapter 5
The wind set Arcemis and Freyo down in the mountains. They found the dwarf blacksmith at his forge, hammer ringing. But he was not alone. Five strangers stood with him, drawn from every corner of Gaia. Arcemis counted them and understood. These were the guardians Gaia had promised.
Freyo groaned first. A red-haired mermaid turned toward them, staff in hand, seawater trailing from its shell tip. "You brought the Fae," she said. Her voice sharpened. "Of course you did."
"Marina." Arcemis stepped forward. The name caught in his throat. She had once been his lover. Now her eyes moved over him like a stranger's, careful and cold. "You're a guardian too."
"Guardian of Water." She lifted her chin. "I came because Gaia called. Not because of you."
A soft growl cut between them. A beastman leaned against the forge wall, white fur bright in the firelight, yellow eyes half-closed. Lucien, Guardian of Earth. He did not raise his voice. He never needed to. "Save the reunion," he said gently. "You brought riders to our door."
Arcemis frowned. "How do you know that?"
"The ground told me." Lucien pressed one paw flat to the stone. "Hooves. Many. Climbing fast." His calm made it worse.
A huge orc rose from beside the anvil, brass on his fists. Tybore, Guardian of Fire. "Then we stop talking and we fight," he growled. He looked at Arcemis and grunted. "You. Light-bearer. You lead?"
"He leads," said a quiet blue giant near the tents. Lira, Guardian of Space, spoke without meeting anyone's eyes. Her hands twisted a small vial. "Gaia showed us all the same vision. Seven, and a man of gold."
The seventh guardian stayed in shadow. "I've been counting the dead these riders left on the roads," Circe said. Her words came slow and low. Guardian of Shadows, pale as a corpse. "Now the killers come to us. How convenient."
Horns sounded below. Rhademus's riders broke through the pass, torches climbing the dark slope.
Arcemis drew his sword. Gold light spilled across seven faces. "You don't have to trust me," he said. "But if we scatter, we die apart. Together, we hold this forge."
For a breath, no one moved. Then Marina slammed her staff down. Water surged into a wall across the path. Lucien raised stone spikes behind it. Tybore's fists caught fire. Freyo leaped onto the wind and drew his bow.
The riders hit the wall and broke. Arrows curved. Flame roared. Roots dragged horses down. Arcemis cut through the last man himself. When the slope fell quiet, eight guardians stood in the firelight.
The dwarf lowered his hammer. "So," he said. "We're all here."
Arcemis breathed hard. He had found them. The seven were gathered. But Circe stepped toward him, eyes narrow. "They followed you here," she said softly. "And one of theirs escaped up the pass. Rhademus will know exactly where we stand now."
Arcemis looked at the empty ridge. The gathering was done. The hunt had only grown teeth.
