Chapter 1

Aura Prisma had drawn ten thousand faces, and not one of them breathed. She stood in her cluttered studio and glared at the newest failure on her easel. A woman's face. Correct nose, correct mouth, dead as a coin. She wanted more than a good likeness. She wanted a portrait so alive the woman would step off the canvas and walk beside her. Every attempt stayed flat. She knew why. She had never once studied a living person up close, eye to eye, long enough to catch what made them real. She had lost this way before. The blue door on Calle del Mar. She kept saying tomorrow, and the wreckers came first. She would not lose a face the same way. Her sister sat by the window, shuffling a worn tarot deck. Casandra Videncia visited without warning and stayed without asking. She wore dark blue and gold, with starry ornaments tangled in her gray hair. She turned a card face up and laughed softly at no one. "You paint the dead and wonder why they lie still," Casandra said. "I paint from memory," Aura said. "It is all I have." "Memory is a closed door." Casandra tapped the card. "Sit before something that can look back." Aura's chest tightened. "Then let me draw you. Hold still. One hour." Casandra set down her deck. "I can hold an hour. The world may not." Aura ignored the strange words. She pulled her tall shelf of oil paints close, uncorked a jar of muted blue, and worked fast. This time she watched. She caught the twitch at the corner of Casandra's mouth. The way her eyes drifted to the empty air and returned. The small tremble in her hands that had not been there years ago. Aura painted the tremble too. She painted what the woman felt, not just what she looked like. An hour passed. Aura stepped back. The portrait breathed. The painted eyes seemed to track her across the room. She had done it. She had finally caught a living likeness. Her hands shook with joy. Then the painted mouth moved. Just slightly. A whisper of pigment shifting. Casandra rose, cold now. She stared at the canvas, and for once she did not laugh. "You opened it," she said. "I felt the latch give." "Opened what?" Aura asked. "A door." Casandra's voice dropped. "The last time one opened, a city came apart. Something walks through when a face wakes. It is already coming." A floorboard creaked in the hall outside the studio. Aura had locked that door herself. The knob turned slowly. In the gap of shadow beneath it, she saw the tips of dark boots, and the faint glint of gold gears at a stranger's belt. Aura's triumph curdled. She had wanted a portrait that lived. She had made one. And now something had come to answer it.
