Chapter 1

Rico adjusted his sunglasses and planted his sandals in the warm sand of Okie Dokie beach. The white-furred yeti didn't belong here, everyone said so. Too cold-blooded for the tropics. Too mountain-bred for palm trees. But Rico had a dream burning hotter than the island sun. He'd prove them all wrong. He'd show every local, every tourist, every doubter that a yeti could thrive in paradise. This wasn't just vacation. This was home. The restaurant would need customers first. Rico needed to show what he could do. He grabbed three surfboards from his storage unit and hauled them to the beach. One pink, one orange, one turquoise. He stuck them upright in the sand near the water. People would see them. On each board, he painted the same message in bold white letters: "SURF LESSONS - BIG SNOWCONE RICO - FREE THIS WEEK." The locals thought yetis couldn't handle the heat or the waves. They were wrong about both. Rico had spent months learning to surf back in his mountain lake. The ocean was just bigger water. He planted himself next to the boards and waited. A few people walked by and stared. One kid pointed and laughed. But then a teenage girl stopped. She looked at the boards, then at Rico. "You really teach?" she asked. Rico grinned and nodded. "First lesson starts now," he said. By the end of the week, Rico had taught twelve people to surf. Word spread fast on the island. The yeti who could ride waves. The furball who didn't melt in the sun. He'd earned their attention, but attention wasn't trust. Trust required something more. Rico found a vacant building three blocks from the beach. Open walls, ocean breeze flowing through, space for tables under string lights. He signed the lease that afternoon. The tropical restaurant would serve fresh fish, cold drinks, and island music every night. This was where he'd prove a yeti could do more than survive in paradise. He could make it better. Rico spent two weeks fixing up the restaurant. He hung paper lanterns from the rafters. He built a bar from driftwood and painted it sunset orange. He tested recipes for grilled fish tacos and frozen drinks with little umbrellas. Opening night arrived on a Friday. Rico set up a limbo pole near the entrance with tiki torches on each side and bright flowers wrapped around the base. The music started at six. Three people showed up. Then five more. By seven, every table was full. Rico moved between the kitchen and the floor, serving plates and refilling glasses. When someone asked about the limbo pole, Rico ducked under it without using his hands. His yeti flexibility made it easy. The crowd cheered. One old man stood and clapped. "You're one of us now," he said. Rico smiled wide. Paradise felt like home.
