Chapter 1

Belle O'Ruste counted the coin twice before she slid the purse across the table. Bruton did not touch it. He sat in the small back room of the Witch's Pyre, elbows on the wood, his notched axe leaning by his knee. The pub above them was loud with the first honest crowd Belle had seen in weeks. Down here it was just the two of them, a candle, and the price of a war. "Knothole is done," Bruton said. "Cellars cleared. Fields burned. We left no one standing." He let the sentence settle. Belle rubbed the stub of her missing ear, a habit she kept when a deal ran clean. For a year the Knothole Troll Syndicate had squeezed her suppliers and taxed every cask of Oxshire mead that came up Blackstone Mountain. She had built this pub with her own hands out of a place no one else wanted, and she had promised herself she would not pour another man's mead in it forever. "Then we're square," she said. She pushed the purse an inch closer. Bruton took it without looking inside. That was the part she respected. He stood, ducked the low beam, and left through the side door. Belle heard his horse a minute later, then nothing. She climbed the stairs and went out the back. Behind the pub, on ground she had cleared herself, the first Riverbed Craw stinkweed stood waist-high in a squat brass planter fed by copper pipe and a small steam bladder. Green leaves dripped with condensation. Two rows over, the tiller she had taken from the Knothole yard sat parked in the dirt, its blades still crusted with someone else's soil. She had not cleaned it. She wanted the stain visible. Beside the gate, her men had driven a plank into the earth with a short sword: THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS PROTECTED BY THE MAULERS. The paint was fresh. Two Maulers stood under it, chewing craw and watching the tree line. Belle lit a pinch of Riverbed Craw and drew it deep. The syndicate's farming rig was hers. Their fields were ash. Her grow was in the ground. The funds for the meadery were counted and set aside in a lockbox under the bar. For the first time since she had signed the deed on the Witch's Pyre, she owned every step in the chain from seed to cup. Something moved at the edge of the pines. Belle squinted through the smoke. A branch shifted where no wind touched it, then went still. One of the Maulers turned his head. He did not call out. Belle held the smoke in her lungs a beat longer than she meant to, then let it go slow. She had bought the mountain tonight. She had not bought quiet.
