Chapter 3

Kelala walked through Mirthwood Meadows as morning mist clung to the grass. She had practiced the sequences until her muscles remembered them, but something still felt missing. The sacred glade sat at the meadow's heart, and she had never seen it up close. A soft glow pulled her forward through the trees. She pushed past a curtain of hanging moss and stopped. The clearing ahead sparkled with tiny lights strung between ancient oaks. Pixies filled the space, their wings catching moonlight like silk. They sat in small groups, passing cups and plates between them. Laughter and quiet voices mixed with the sound of crickets. Kelala stepped closer and watched two older pixies demonstrate a spin, their feet moving in the exact pattern she had studied. Others clapped and cheered. This was where the dance lived, not just in books but in the pixies who shared it. Kelala landed at the edge of the gathering and folded her wings. An elderly pixie offered her a cup of nectar and gestured to an empty spot on a smooth log. She sat and sipped, watching the demonstrations continue. Each dancer added their own story between the movements, explaining why certain steps mattered or how the rhythm connected to the meadow's seasons. The sacred glade wasn't just a performance space. It was a place where traditions passed from one pixie to another through shared moments like these. Kelala felt the final piece click into place. She didn't just need to master the steps. She needed to understand what the dance meant to her community. When she performed at the ceremony, she would carry all of these stories with her. The gathering ended as dawn light filtered through the trees. Kelala walked deeper into the glade and found a monument carved from white stone. Pixies were frozen in dance poses across its surface, their forms captured mid-spin and mid-leap. She traced her fingers over the carved figures. Each one showed a master who had performed at this very spot. Their dedication had earned them a place in the meadow's memory. Kelala stepped back and looked at the empty space beside the monument. One day, if she worked hard enough, she might join them. But for now, she had everything she needed. The golden tome had taught her the steps. The gathering had shown her the heart behind them. She spread her wings and lifted into the air, ready to practice with new purpose. She flew back through the meadow as the sun climbed higher. A sign decorated with pastel rainbow flowers hung from a willow branch ahead. The words promised ancient dance teachings inside a small cottage just beyond it. Kelala landed and peered through the doorway. Wooden floors stretched across the practice space, worn smooth by countless feet. The monument had shown her the masters who came before. The gathering had given her their stories. Now this place offered her the space to bring everything together. She stepped inside and began the first sequence. Her feet struck the floor in steady rhythm. Each movement carried the weight of tradition and the hope of ceremony. She knew exactly what she was dancing for now.
