Thanatos gripped his scythe and studied the glowing scroll before him. Names flickered across the ancient paper in silver light. Each name belonged to a soul he needed to collect. The mysterious higher power had given him this list without explanation. He existed to serve, to gather, to complete his task. The Spirit Realm stretched endlessly around him in swirling mist and shadow. He needed a place to keep the souls once he collected them. Deep in the realm, he found a pit that whispered and called to him. The voices of the afterlife echoed from its depths. This would work. He would bring each soul here after he took them from their bodies. The pit would hold them until the higher power came to claim them. But how would he know which souls to collect next? The scroll only showed names when he opened it. Thanatos walked through the mist until he spotted an amulet hanging in the air. It glowed with pale light and showed him faces and names. The metal twisted in patterns that hurt to look at. This amulet would guide him to his targets. He could check it whenever he needed the next name. Some souls would be across water. Thanatos walked to the edge of a dark river. A boat waited there, glowing green in the darkness. Its light cut through the fog like a blade. He would use it to carry souls across the water to the pit. Everything was ready now. The work could begin.
