Cloudwhisker counted the coins in his pouch for the third time that morning. Five copper bits and a cracked silver piece—barely enough for another week of supplies. He sat in his hollow, surrounded by travelers who paid him in food and metal for small secrets, harmless ones that wouldn't break their minds. But this wasn't enough anymore. He wanted something more than surviving day to day in this cramped space. He wanted a tavern, a real building with walls and a roof, where people would come to him with their secrets and leave their gold behind. He tucked the pouch into his belt and climbed out of the hollow. His joints ached as he moved through the trees, following the sound of running water. A stream cut through the forest floor, clear and cold. Travelers always stopped at water sources like this one. They filled their skins, washed their faces, rested their feet. If he built his tavern near water, they would find it. They would stop. They would stay long enough to talk, to drink, to pay. The path led him to a clearing where two buildings stood. The first was a small structure with rounded stone walls and a grey thatch roof, weathered but solid. Travelers gathered near its entrance, talking in low voices. The second building sat deeper in the clearing—a lodge with tall timber beams and stained glass windows that caught the afternoon light. Its chimney rose high above the roofline. Cloudwhisker's chest tightened. This was the kind of place he needed. A real tavern where secrets would flow as freely as coin. He watched the travelers move between the buildings and the stream. They came here because they needed water and shelter. They came because the road brought them here. If he could claim a space like this lodge, fill it with good mead and better listening, he would never count copper bits again. His hollow days were numbered.
