Eva Sterling crouched on the rooftop, watching the street below through her black-rimmed glasses. Her white ears twitched at every sound. Keeping Jacob safe meant staying two steps ahead of everyone in Tongassia. She adjusted her leather satchel and stood. Tonight, she'd find the information she needed. She dropped down into the alley and moved toward the worn blue post box on the corner. It looked ordinary, perfect for her plan. Eva slipped a folded note inside through the mail slot. The box would be her drop point for warnings. Anyone watching would see nothing but a cat mailing a letter. Three blocks over, she found what she'd been searching for. A small patio sat outside a café with three chairs circled around a metal table. People passed by constantly. Eva sat down and opened her satchel, pretending to read. This spot gave her clear views in every direction. She could meet contacts here without hiding in shadows. Jacob would never know the deals she made to keep him safe. The real prize came at dawn. Eva stood before a stone and brick house tucked away from the main roads. Ivy crawled up one wall. The windows had thick curtains. She pulled the key from her coat pocket and unlocked the door. Inside, the rooms were small but solid. Jacob could stay here while she handled the dangerous work. Eva walked through each room, checking the locks twice. This house would be their fortress. Her brother would finally be protected from the threats that followed her everywhere in Tongassia.
