Chapter 1

Daniel crouched beside the training mat, watching through the window as his daughter practiced her kicks with the other cadets. He'd missed three years of her life while deployed. Now he had a chance to make it right. The Ranger program brought him here, but she was the reason he stayed. Every morning he showed up early. Every evening he waited to walk her home. Small actions, repeated. That was how trust rebuilt itself—one day at a time. Red and gold banners hung from the dojo walls, bright against the wooden beams. Paper lanterns swayed near the entrance, celebrating the Lunar New Year. Daniel had arrived before dawn to help hang them. His daughter noticed when she walked in. She didn't smile, but her eyes lingered on the decorations for a moment. That was enough. He would be here tomorrow, and the day after that. The dojo gave them both a place to start over. She trained with the other cadets while he worked with the Ranger team. At the end of each day, they walked the same path home. Words came slowly between them, but his presence spoke louder. He wasn't going anywhere this time. After training ended, Daniel waited outside on a bench near the dojo entrance. The seat had lunar designs carved into the wood, painted in red and gold. His daughter came through the door, adjusting her gym bag. She stopped when she saw him. For three seconds, she just stood there. Then she walked over and sat down beside him, leaving space between them. They watched other students leave. Neither spoke. A cool breeze moved through the courtyard. Daniel kept his hands folded in his lap. She pulled her jacket tighter. On the weekend, Daniel brought a set of outdoor games to the training yard. Colorful pieces lay spread across a blanket—traditional games meant for the new year celebration. His daughter walked past, then paused. She picked up one of the game pieces, turning it over in her hand. Daniel explained the rules, keeping his voice steady. She nodded and sat down across from him. They played for twenty minutes. She won twice. When she packed up to leave, she took the game set with her. Daniel stood and watched her go, the empty blanket folded under his arm. Tomorrow he would be here again. The dojo, the bench, the games—each was a step forward. Each brought them closer to what they'd lost. He was building something that would last.
